Save Our Swamp Event A Huge Success!

Seventy boaters gathered on a warm day last Sunday, Oct. 14 on Geneva Marsh to protest the proposed Tire Incinerator in Crawford County. Participants joined in a group of over 30 boats behind a sign with the address for the Crawford Area Residents for the Environment website, StopBurningTires.com.
The protest was designed to give the community an opportunity to experience the ecological bounty of Pennsylvania’s largest marshland while also asserting its vital importance to the region.  Many area residents are concerned that the proposed incinerator, which would be built less than two miles from Geneva Marsh, could adversely affect the marsh and the health of the surrounding community. Based on the prevailing wind patterns, much of the emission output from the facility could blow in the direction of the marsh.
The marsh is important to many Crawford County residents, both aesthetically and recreationally. The marsh is a popular place for boaters, hunters, and naturalists. It is also home to a breeding population of bald eagles, and is designated as Site 7 on Pennsylvania's Important Bird Area list. Many endangered, threatened, and rare species of plants, birds, and other animals are found there, and it is an essential stop in many species migratory paths.
The event itself was spearheaded by CARE activists Scott and Amy Hricsina and Colleen Nye, working in part with the Allegheny Students for Environmental Action.
Participants also took part in a photo contest sponsored by CARE and Arts for Everyone, the program that hosts and promotes local art shows and events. A4E Director George Nowack and T. Alan Kirk of Meadville Fine Arts will judge the entries. The winner's picture, along with a collection of entries from the finalists, will be displayed at the Arts for Everyone exhibit space at the Meadville Market House, and then the exhibit will travel to the other A4E exhibit spaces around Crawford County.

CARE, a local grass-roots environmental group, has raised serious concerns about the proposed tire incinerator planned for Greenwood Township. The facility would be a major source of hazardous air pollution, burning 900 tons of tires a day and releasing over 1300 tons of emission each year.  Last November, two local residents filed appeal of the PA DEP air quality permit that was issued for the facility. That appeal is still going strong, and based on the current schedule published on the EHB website, the parties involved are expected be in court sometime in the spring. The appeal outlines fifteen legal objections which assert that the emission control technology analysis was incomplete and flawed, and that the low emissions estimates were incorrect.

Who Really Supports the Tire Incinerator?

Most area politicians, when asked about their support for the tire incinerator planned for Crawford County, tend to respond that it is out of their hands, and that they are not involved.  Recently we confronted State Representative Brad Roae at a town hall meeting and he, and his manager who answered some questions for him, were very clear:  It wasn't in their district, they were not involved, and they were not interested in discussing it. Behind the scenes, however, Brad Roae IS involved. Not only has he been promoting the incinerator, he has been asking the Governor for tax-payer money to fund rail construction for the facility!
Through my research I have discovered that Brad is not the only local politician to have written glowing letters about the incinerator to Governor Corbett and State Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch. State Representatives Michelle Brooks, John Evans, State Senator Robert D. Robbins, Meadville Mayor Christopher Soff and all of the Crawford County Commissioners wrote letters of support. Some of the letters include praise for the project that eerily mirrors CRE's promotional materials. The Crawford County Commissioners repeat CRE's claims about jobs almost word-for-word, and Brad Roae goes a step further, saying: "The positive environmental and economic impacts will be invaluable to the region."

In a time of deep and painful cuts in the state budget, why did our elected officials ask for our tax-payer money to fund the rail portion of the world's largest tire incinerator?

UPDATE 8/24/12
Here is an update on the Railroad Transportation Assistance Grant that had been sought by CRE and the Economic Progress Alliance.  This grant requires a 30% local share commitment from CRE of $858,000. Because of the Environmental Hearing Board appeal, CRE has requested and received an extension to the deadline for providing the match until the appeal is resolved. It is our understanding that the grant money will not be awarded until CRE provides this local share, which puts construction of the rail project on hold until after the appeal.

Welcome

Are you tired of reading news articles that only cover bits and pieces of the complex issues involved in the tire incineration battle? Want to know more about what is going on in the fight against the proposed tire incinerator in Crawford County, PA? This space will serve as a long-overdue blog that will cover what others simply refuse to, and I will connect the dots on some of the head-scratcher questions that our area media just won't tackle. As a member of CARE, Crawford Area Residents for the Environment, I feel a regular update via this blog will be a great way to elaborate on all of the activities we have going on. Our website, www.stopburningtires.com, is a great resource for fact sheets, medical statements, and presentations on the dangers of the proposed incinerator. This blog will be for our news announcements, as well as analysis of ongoing news items that you may not have seen or heard about elsewhere.
